Help us raise money for Children's Hospital Los Angeles and raise awareness! Let's Stand For The Kids!! What exactly is Stand For the Kids? Stand For The Kids is an annual event held nationally by different chapters of Phi Delta Epsilon. The goal of SFTK is to help raise money for Children's Miracle Network (in our case CHLA), Phi Delta Epsilon's philanthropic partner, by standing in solidarity for the kids who cannot stand themselves. Children's Miracle Network is a network of hospitals that provides low-cost and even free healthcare to children, regardless of their family's ability to pay. By participating in our event, you are standing in solidarity with those kids too! For every hour we stand, we are raising awareness and funds for the children at CHLA! If you would like to sponsor any of our members or our fraternity as a whole, please send us an e-mail at phidecatheta@gmail.com All proceeds will be given to Children's Hospital Los Angeles! Thank you all so much for your time!

![]() Every month, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles needs around 1000 pints of blood to operate its life-saving procedures and heal its sick children. Unfortunately, the blood bank is SEVERELY LOW right now and CHLA needs your help! The hospital typically obtains around 800 pints from its donors’ valued contributions: this is where all of you lovely donors come in. This semester, we are hosting our blood drive differently. Instead of our usual one-day blood drive, we will be hosting a TWO-DAY BLOOD DRIVE! On Wednesday, October 22nd and Wednesday, October 29th, in hopes to make a difference. In the past, the fraternity has helped CHLA attain nearly 100 pints of blood in one day, but we know we can do better and we need your help more than ever! Our goal is to have donations of about 200 pints of blood For The Kids! Let's try to surpass this goal! We know that California State University, Northridge can make a huge and positive impact at Children's Hospital Los Angeles! So please come support Phi Delta Epsilon and CHLA in its mission to provide a healthier future for its children in front of the Matador Bookstore Complex on Wednesday 22nd and 29th from 10AM to 2PM! Donate some blood and have some fun with CHLA and Phi Delta Epsilon - CA Theta! If you donate blood you will also be placed in a drawing to win GAS MONEY, STARBUCKS GIFT CARDS, MOVIE TICKETS, DINNER AND A MOVIE, & SO MUCH MORE! We hope to see many of you there! FTK (For the Kids)! ![]() It's a new semester, which means that there is another opportunity to save a child's life. This semester, Phi Delta Epsilon is hosting another blood drive to support Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). Your donations will make a huge impact on children suffering from life threatening diseases and disorders, like sickle cell anemia! ![]() Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disorder that affects hemoglobin, the protein found in red blood cells that helps carry oxygen throughout the body. It mostly affects people of African ancestry, but also occurs in other ethnic groups, including people who are of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern descent. More than 70,000 Americans have sickle cell anemia. Many children with sickle cell anemia occasionally need to get transfusions of healthy red blood cells to help carry oxygen to the tissues of their bodies more effectively and treat complications. A few may need transfusions regularly. Blood transfusions save lives every day. By donating your blood, you can give these children another shot at living a healthier life! Information about Sickle Cell Anemia is provided by: Kids Health We can't wait to see you here in front of the Matador Bookstore Complex! If you have never donated before, here is how the process takes place: 1. Verify your Eligibility • You will be asked about your history and your general health on the the day of donation 2. Check your Vital Signs • A CHLA staff member will check your blood pressure, pulse and temperature, and then, he or she will take a blood sample to check for anemia. 3. Begin the Donation Process • A blood donation takes only 15 minutes. It is important for you to relax. Your body will begin replenishing blood almost immediately. Blood can be donated every 8 weeks. 4. Ready for Departure • CHLA will provide you with snacks, juice and water after you have donated to help you replenish your blood.

On Tuesday, February 21st, Phi Delta Epsilon hosted a blood drive to support Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA). To treat its patients, CHLA relies on blood donations from the public to meet its monthly quota of 1000 pints of blood. Typically, the hospital obtains around 800 pints of blood before the end of the month. However, to obtain its last 200 pints, CHLA purchases that blood from other sources, like the American Red Cross. Phi Delta Epsilon sought to help out, and, on February 21st, it did. To help CHLA carry out its blood drive, the fraternity assisted the hospital in multiple ways. Before the event, Phi Delta Epsilon heavily advertised for the blood drive by posting flyers on campus and onto the Matador Information Network Displays, creating a Facebook event and having members invite friends. On the day of the event, members sporting CHLA’s “JUST DONATE IT” shirts helped out by instructing blood donors on how to complete their paperwork, stopping and asking passersby if they would be interested in donating blood and handing out water and snacks to donors. Overall, the fraternity made a strong effort to help CHLA. Despite the blood drive closing more than 30 minutes before its scheduled ending time, CHLA and Phi Delta Epsilon managed to raise 61 bags of blood. Although this number is lower than previous blood drives, Vice President of Programming, Anita Shrivastava, is pleased but determined to do better. She says, “I believe we got a rather large number of bags considering Red Cross's blood mobile was on campus twice in the past two weeks. However it is not good enough for our standards, I believe we definitely could have gotten more bags of blood.” With that said, Phi Delta Epsilon plans to host another blood drive later this semester that’s bigger and better than this one was. Although our next blood drive’s date and time have yet to be finalized, some changes are already being considered to make it more successful. For example, we are considering offering donors incentives ranging from ice cream coupons to tickets to various sports games. Other changes include ending the blood drive after 3:00 PM, holding the event for two days instead of one and having more blood drawing stations so that more people can donate at a time. Stay tuned to the PhiDE website for more information on future blood drives and CHLA-related events! For the first time ever, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is hosting EXTRA LIFE, a 24-hour gaming marathon to raise money to help sick and injured kids. It’s coming up soon – October 16, 2010. Here’s how it works: 1. First you need to Sign Up. 2. Then e-mail friends, family, co-workers and fellow gamers and ask them to sponsor you. Every $1 you raise equals one hour that you can play. Sign eight people up to sponsor you for just $1 per hour, and you will receive a free, limited edition Extra Life T-shirt. 3. On Saturday, October 16, play games, heal kids and have fun! You can play any game on any gaming system (Wii, XBOX, PS3, etc.), even your smart phone or computer. What’s important is that you ask others to support you in your effort to heal kids. Asking for just $1 for every hour you play video games can add up quickly and can mean all the difference to the sick and injured kids at CHLA. CHLA invites you to share your experience with them. Looking forward to playing Halo: Reach? Maybe you just love Tiger Woods Golf on Wii or can’t get enough of World of Warcraft. Tell them about games you love, and how much money you’ve raised. Best of all, tell them about why you support Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. They want to hear from you! They are currently recruiting college students for their program. This is a great opportunity for pre-med students. Not only does this type of volunteer work look great on resumes, but also on medical school applications because the volunteering is outside of the medical field! Let them know if you have any questions by contacting Jessica Hernandez via e-mail at jessyvette86@gmail.com To learn about LATM and the TeamWorks program, you can visit their website or visit their Facebook page.
